You were created for a ‘secret place’ of connection with God

When God created you He made something very wonderful. Men and women are the pinnacle of the Father’s world and we are different from His many other works in that we are created to be His children, to relate directly to Him and to be lovingly connected to Him.

Psalms 139:14-16 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

One thing that’s wonderful about you is that there was a unique ‘secret place’ where God created you, and you can always go there to connect with Him.

In Psalm 139, the word describing the place of your creation is interesting: in Hebrew the word for ‘secret place’ is ‘sether‘. It means a protected, concealed and covered place, a place of intimacy where God and you were alone together on the day that He formed you, where He shaped your inner being with love and where He planned your future days with goodness and excitement. The same word ‘sether‘ elsewhere in the Psalms refers to the place of intimate fellowship and connection between man and God. Here are some examples:

  • Psalm 27:4-5 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple. For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; in the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock. The secret place is a part of God’s tent, the place where He lives; His tabernacle, the Heavenly dwelling place.
  • Psalm 31:20 You hide them in the secret place of Your presence. The secret place is in God Himself, in His Presence.
  • Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter (sether – secret place) of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. The secret place is being under God’s shadow.
  • Psalm 61:4 I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter (sether – secret place) of your wings. The secret place is being covered over by God’s wings.

So the point is this: God created you in a unique and special place, known only to Him and discoverable only by you, and it’s in that secret place of intimacy that He means for you to now dwell, to fellowship with Him and to connect with His Holy Spirit. There’s a secret place for each of His children because each one occupies a unique place in God’s great heart.

Jesus described true prayer as something that happens with God ‘in the secret place’ (Matt 6:6). Prayer isn’t like depositing coins into a some spiritual machine hoping for a result once some unknown process has taken place. Prayer is a connection in the heart with God Himself.

Similarly, Jesus spoke of a unique room that each child of God has in God’s house, prepared through His death and resurrection. John 14:2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I used to read this verse thinking the room is a place reserved for when we die and go to Heaven, but actually it’s a place we’re meant to inhabit now through the Holy Spirit to experience Heaven on earth! Jesus is the way into this place in God’s Presence.

This is the wonderful thing about you. The Father loves you so much that He’s reserved a place just for you in His home and within Himself so that you can connect with Him, experience His sweet Presence and enjoy divine life flowing through your veins by the Holy Spirit.

Don’t leave that secret room empty for one day. Quieten your heart and connect with God often through the steps of life’s journey, as a son going in to embrace the Father. Visit this spiritual secret place frequently and make it the centre of your life – this is the essence of the a Christian life that’s real.

Don’t be satisfied just to know things about God. You can’t be truly satisfied by anything other than experiencing Him intimately through the Holy Spirit – hearing Him speak to you, feeling His loving embrace surround you, joining Heaven’s host in worship and waiting in His Presence. This is what you were created for and nothing else can satisfy. Augustine wrote, ‘you have created us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee.

Step in. Its where you belong.

  1. Love this. This is the essence of our relationship with the Lord and a core truth. It is the foundation of all spiritual growth, individually as well as corporately as a church.
