God established the Jubilee year for the Israelites as the shadow of a heavenly work that He does with His children today. Every 50th year was declared a time of rest and celebration for the years before, and inheritances were restored to each person. If a family had lost its ancestral land for whatever reason – neglect, error, a business risk that didn’t pay off or just tough times – the land was returned. If it was heavily mortgaged by debt, encumbered by onerous contracts or occupied by pesky tenants, these were all cancelled to make it free and clear, like the day God had first proclaimed it belonged as inheritance to a family line. Servants were set free to pursue their own paths in life, and every obligation was cancelled.
What does the Jubilee mean for us today? What is God doing?
I’m en route to South Africa from Houston via my favourite layover city, Istanbul Turkey.
Once walking through Taksim Square in Istanbul, famous for a movement similar to the Arab Spring a few years ago, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to me, “this is going to be the epicentre of a revival that reaches the entire Muslim world” and a year earlier, while worshiping Jesus in a mosque prayer area in Istanbul, I felt the Lord whisper, “I gave oil to these nations out of my love for them though it hasn’t benefited many but only few. The time is coming when I will pour out my Spirit in equal measure to the amount of physical oil I have given these nations.” These are very precious promises which I hold onto in faith and share with others who long for the Father’s love to draw millions of Muslims into the embrace of a true experience with God that isn’t based on human effort. Jesus was not pronouncing a gloomy verdict when He asked, ‘when the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth?’ He was posing a challenge, daring us to a faith that sees that ‘the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea‘ (Hab 2:14).
On my way back to the US after a great trip to South Africa, I’m reflecting on the state and the prospects of our ‘rainbow nation’. Many challenges exist including the latest ‘xenophobic crisis’, but seeing the great work that the Lord is doing, particularly among university students, gives me great hope that our best days are ahead, that the goodness of Christ’s Kingdom is expanding and that God has an intention for South Africa to shine His light brightly to the continent and to the world. “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matt 13:44
I arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa this morning for one of my twice-yearly 10 day trips here and I am feeling a pregnant sense of excitement in the (spiritual) air. The Lord’s heart is very full of purpose and goodwill for this “capital city of Africa”, and the key is the gold that He sees in hearts of men and women. Continue reading
